INPEX Christmas Party

Was asked back to the INPEX Christmas party this year for the second year running - I think I will have drawn everyone in the whole company soon - I feel like I'm a employee. Thanks to Jo for keeping me nourished for the whole evening. Here were my two favourite caricatures - someone liked Claire's so much (the one on the right) that they took it home for themselves... she's now convinced that one of her colleagues is a psychopath with a shrine dedicated to her, and this is the latest piece for the collection...

ISCA Convention 2009

Back at work now (gahh...) after an awesome trip to Sandusky Ohio and the 2009 ISCA convention. It was my first convention and I got swept up in the madness - 1 whole week of caricaturing, only to stop for food, sleep and caramel macchiato's. I've attached below some of the pieces I did for my "wall".

Campaign Brief

My Danny Green has been used in a posting by ad agency publication, Campaign Brief:

Michael Collin's Caricature Award 2009

Got my quota of 3 entries done for the Michael Collin's Caricature Award. My first attempt was Ben Cousins who I completed 80% of until I eventually realised I'd done it too big for the competition (A3 was max) and plus I'd done it on a canvas. Was not a happy camper that day I can tell ya.

Winners were announced last Friday. As per usual I received diddly, but only encourages me to come back stronger next year... My final (correctly sized) entries below:

Did this commissioned piece last night for a client who had seen me at the Brewery Entertainer's expo... art stix on illustration board.

Variety Bash Fundraiser at Perth Markets

Spent a Sat 18th April helping to raise money for the Variety Club by contributing all proceeds from caricatures at the Perth Markets. Was a bit slow to start because of drizzly weather, but things ended up picking up a bit towards the end.
Had fun caricaturing stall owners during the quiet periods. Here are some of faces from the day...  One interesting request of the day was whether I'd be able to draw a caricature from a "description".... I politely declined and referred the guy to Terry Dunnett who is an ex-police sketch artist and now caricaturist/illustrator.

Variety Bash

Momentum Engineering are raising money for the Variety Club Bash and I've done a caricature of the three amigos that will be entering in it. All the details can be found at www.team1970.com.au. If you're interested in contributing to this worthy cause then details for donations are on the website.

Starlight Gig

Thanks again to Jason putting me forward to Joanne for the Starlight Big Kid's night out gig which Steve, myself and Dave did caricatures to raise money. Between us we raised around $600. A couple of shots from the event here:

Recent Live gigs

It's been a while since the last post, so thought I'd show some recent live caricature gig snaps. This one here is of the 4 guys that will be touring Australia for the Jersey Boys productions (musical based on the life of Frankie Vallie and the 4 seasons).

Thanks to Jason for recommending me for this gig. Was fun.

I don't usually "pick" people out of a crowd to draw because too many times that's ended very awkwardly, but some people are just worth that risk. Luckily Andrew here was open to the idea. I love drawing glasses on people.

Perth market opening shenanigans...

Spent some of this Aussie day weekend at the opening of the Perth markets. Met up with Stephen Price who organised a stall and did everything properly like setting up the sign, getting there on time, etc. Me on the other hand tagged along at my leisure like some sort of caricaturing bum.
Loved the set-up - did a caricatur
e of the soap lady in the stall next door and went to town on her - she said if I felt any sharp pains that night that it was because she was going to make a voodoo doll of me and planned on stabbing it wildly. I didn't manage to get a photo of it but here are some of the others which included my biggest live one yet - a family of seven!

Urban Hero Barassi caricature I completed Wednesday night, just in the nick of time to avoid the penalty fees from Troy.

Urban hero - Barassi caricature

I managed to crank up the Presets and find some drive last night. Continued work on Ron Barassi caricature which I'd already done the pre-sketch on. The "firsts" on this piece include using "canvas paper" and a "wet palette".
The canvas paper is just that - paper which exhibits the slight grained texture of actual canvas. I actually like it - it's really taking the paint nicely and I was enjoying the use of the glazed mixing medium because it gave me a lot of freedom to wash out the flesh tones to the desired weight.
The wet palette is something I picked up from Jacksons which includes a couple of sponges and some wax paper. I still needed to use a spray bottle which I mixed medium into and sprayed over the palette while I worked, so it seems the main point of this thing (the palette I got at least) is to keep the acrylic paints wet for the following day (not during a session).
Hopefully finish this off tonight because I have a deadline to have it done for tomorrow night's unveiling at Troy's place ($500 fine otherwise!). By the way, Troy has been making updates to my webpage and has recently put the link to this blog on there. Why does he do this? Because he is a top bloke, that's why.

Well whaddya know... I'm blogging...

Blog, schmog... as a result of not having sufficient web editing tools, I've chosen the easier option and finally jumped onto this blog bandwagon.

To kick things off I've attached my most recent piece I've done for an up-and-coming exhibition in Ellenbrook. The theme is "Heroes and Villians" and it reflects what the new US president elect is "expected" to be doing with regards to the conflict on the Gaza strip once he is in power... let's wait and see shall we - the answer is only days away...
